Introduction

M-Bus (Meter-Bus) is a widely used communication interface for various types of meters, including electricity, water, and heat meters. Its key advantages are ease of installation—thanks to a two-wire system that handles both power and communication—and high reliability. Since M-Bus uses its own physical layer and protocol, it is often integrated with other systems like Modbus to enhance compatibility in broader applications.

In industrial automation, Modbus TCP/RTU is one of the most widely adopted communication standards. To bridge the gap between M-Bus and Modbus, ICP DAS developed the GW-7838-M gateway, which enables seamless transmission of meter data from M-Bus to Modbus TCP/RTU. The GW-7838-M supports communication with up to 100 M-Bus devices. Once configured using the M-Bus utility, the gateway can autonomously collect meter data. A PLC or PC acting as a Modbus TCP/RTU client can then access this data via a TCP or RS-232 connection with ease.

The M-Bus (Meter-Bus) is a communication bus specifically designed for reading data from measurement instruments such as energy meters, hot and cold water meters, gas meters, pressure sensors, actuators, and similar devices.
