Smart Environmental Monitoring for Livestock and Poultry Farms

Smart Environmental Monitoring for Livestock and Poultry Farms

Introduction

As avian influenza continues to impact poultry production worldwide, maintaining a healthy farm environment has become increasingly important. Traditional open-sided poultry houses are highly exposed to changing weather conditions, such as temperature and humidity fluctuations, which can increase stress and reduce bird health and productivity.

Creating a stable and comfortable environment is essential for improving poultry welfare and egg production. This case study demonstrates how ICP DAS USA’s smart environmental monitoring and control solution helps poultry farmers monitor key environmental conditions and automatically maintain optimal growing environments, reducing the impact of seasonal changes on farm performance.

Environmental Monitoring & Control

1. The ICP DAS USA Environmental Monitoring Solution integrates environmental monitoring, power monitoring, water management, feed management, and edge computing for centralized farm management.

For environmental monitoring, sensors installed throughout the poultry sheds continuously measure key conditions, including temperature, humidity, illuminance, wind speed, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), ammonia (NH₃), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), and particulate matter. The system also monitors the operating status of lighting, cooling pads, and ventilation equipment.

All field data is collected by the ICP DAS USA WISE-5231 Intelligent IIoT Edge Controller, which processes and transmits information to AVEVA Edge HMI/SCADA for real-time visualization and management. The controller also enables automated control of lighting, cooling pads, and circulation fans, helping maintain optimal environmental conditions for poultry health and productivity.

2. Environmental & Power Monitoring

The ICP DAS USA Environmental Monitoring Solution combines real-time environmental monitoring, equipment control, and energy management to create a healthier and more efficient poultry farming operation.

Environmental sensors continuously monitor key conditions, including temperature, humidity, wind speed, illuminance, air quality, CO, CO₂, NH₃, H₂S, and particulate matter. Data is collected by the ICP DAS USA WISE-5231 Intelligent IIoT Edge Controller, which provides local logic control, alarm notifications, and automated equipment management.

The system monitors the operating status of lighting, cooling pads, and ventilation fans, and can automatically adjust equipment to maintain optimal conditions for poultry health and productivity. All data is transmitted to AVEVA Edge HMI/SCADA for centralized visualization and management, while mobile and PC tools enable remote access to real-time environmental information.

For energy management, PM-3000 Series Smart Power Meters track farm-wide electricity consumption. The WISE-5231 analyzes power usage and can automatically reduce non-essential loads when consumption exceeds predefined thresholds, helping improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.

By combining environmental monitoring, automated control, remote management, and power monitoring, the solution helps maintain a stable farming environment while enhancing productivity and sustainability.

3. Water Resource Management

The ICP DAS USA PM-3000 Series Smart Power Meters provide highly accurate, real-time energy monitoring, helping operators track power consumption and optimize equipment performance. In this application, the PM-3133-100 3-Phase Smart Power Meter collects power usage data from farm equipment and transmits it to the ICP DAS USA WISE-5231 Intelligent IIoT Edge Controller for centralized monitoring and analysis.

For water resource management, the ICP DAS USA WISE-5231 gathers data from water level and pH sensors installed in the goose pond. Using built-in automation logic, the controller can automatically operate solenoid valves through relay modules to regulate water flow and maintain proper water conditions. All data is transmitted to AVEVA Edge HMI/SCADA for real-time visualization, monitoring, and management.

4. Feed Management

For feed management, ICP DAS USA uses Touch HMI devices to collect and display data from digital and hanging scales, providing real-time visibility into feed levels and consumption.

The scale data is transmitted to the ICP DAS USA WISE-5231 Intelligent IIoT Edge Controller, which executes automated control logic. When feed levels fall below predefined thresholds, the controller automatically activates feeder motors through relay modules to replenish feed supplies.

At the same time, all feed-related data is sent to AVEVA Edge HMI/SCADA for centralized visualization, monitoring, and management. This automated approach helps ensure a consistent feed supply, reduces manual intervention, and improves overall farm efficiency.

5. Edge Computing & Remote Management

The ICP DAS USA TPD and VPD Touch HMI Series provide real-time visualization of feed inventory data collected from digital and hanging scales. This information is transmitted to the ICP DAS USA WISE-5231 Intelligent IIoT Edge Controller, which monitors feed levels and automatically activates feeder motors through relay modules when replenishment is needed. This helps ensure a continuous feed supply while reducing manual intervention.

The ICP DAS USA WISE Intelligent IIoT Edge Controller Series serves as the central control hub for the entire farm. It collects data from all subsystems, executes built-in IF-THEN-ELSE logic, and automatically controls equipment to maintain optimal environmental, water, energy, and feed conditions. Even if communication with the control center is interrupted, the controller continues to perform edge computing, alarm handling, data logging, and automated control locally.

When abnormal conditions are detected, the system automatically sends alarm notifications to designated personnel and records critical events. Its built-in data logging and recovery functions help ensure data integrity and prevent data loss.

All farm data is transmitted to AVEVA Edge HMI/SCADA, where operators can monitor operations through a web-based dashboard, view real-time and historical trends, generate reports, and receive alarm notifications. The platform supports remote access from PCs and mobile devices, enabling efficient farm management anytime, anywhere.
