Introduction

The existing solar-powered streetlights included a built-in 4G gateway, but it was only compatible with the vendor’s proprietary platform and could not connect to the customer’s independently developed system. This limitation raised data security concerns and restricted integration flexibility.

The customer needed a reliable 4G communication solution capable of securely transmitting data from the streetlight control system to a private cloud platform in the control center. Key requirements included:

  1. Antenna Extension for Reliable Communications: The antenna needed to be mounted outside the explosion-proof enclosure to ensure stable 4G signal transmission and reception while meeting safety requirements.
  2. Remote Monitoring and Control: The solution had to support remote reading and writing of device data, enabling operators to monitor equipment status and execute commands from the control center.
  3. Modbus RTU Compatibility: The 4G communication device needed to support the Modbus RTU protocol for seamless integration with the existing streetlight control system.
  4. Flexible Software Integration: The server-side software had to integrate easily with third-party applications, allowing data to be utilized within the customer’s existing platform.

To meet these requirements, ICP DAS USA recommended the GTP-541M 4G Multi-function Controller along with the M2M RTU Center Management Software. This combination provides stable and secure remote communications, enabling real-time streetlight monitoring and helping the customer build a reliable remote management system.

4G Smart Networking for Remote Solar Streetlight Monitoring

The architecture of ICP DAS USA’s solution is shown below.

The GTP-541M 4G Multi-function Controller collects critical operating data from the solar streetlight control system using the Modbus RTU protocol. This data includes controller status, solar panel charging and discharging information, temperature, current, and voltage measurements. The controller also supports remote reading and writing of operating parameters, including lighting schedules, sleep modes, and load control settings.

The GTP-541M 4G Multi-function Controller then transmits the collected data to the M2M RTU Center Management Software over a 4G wireless network. The software stores data in databases such as MS SQL, MySQL, and MariaDB, enabling long-term data collection and analysis.

In addition, the M2M RTU Center supports multiple communication interfaces and APIs, allowing seamless integration with third-party applications and platforms. This flexible architecture enables real-time monitoring, centralized management, and efficient operation of solar streetlight systems.

GTP-541M and M2M RTU Center: Simplifying Remote Streetlight Monitoring

The GTP-541M is an intelligent 4G remote terminal unit (RTU) designed for IIoT applications. It combines data communication, logic control, and event notification into a single device. With ICP DAS USA‘s easy-to-use utility software, users can configure logic functions through a graphical interface without programming, reducing development time and system costs.

The GTP-541M collects data from Modbus devices and I/O signals and transmits it to the M2M RTU Center Management Software. When abnormal conditions are detected, the system can automatically notify maintenance personnel, enabling faster response and reducing downtime.

The M2M RTU Center provides centralized management for ICP DAS USA’s M2M RTU Series. It supports monitoring of built-in I/O, GPS information, and connected Modbus RTU devices, giving operators a complete view of remote equipment status.

The software can manage more than 1,000 RTU devices simultaneously, including the G-451x RTU, GTP-5xxM RTU, and other M2M RTU Series products. This scalable architecture simplifies large-scale remote device management and improves operational efficiency.

For system integration, administrators can connect the M2M RTU Center to SCADA platforms using the M2M OPC Server or use EZ Data Logger software to quickly deploy a remote monitoring solution.

Why ICP DAS USA Recommended the GTP-541M 4G Multi-function Controller

To identify the best solution for the project, ICP DAS USA evaluated three products: the RTU-140, GTP-541M, and WISE-5231M-4GC. Each product was assessed based on functionality, application requirements, and cost-effectiveness to determine the most suitable fit for the customer’s solar streetlight monitoring system.

  • Supports RS-485 and 4G communications.
  • Compatible with the Modbus RTU protocol and Modbus RTU devices.
  • However, the antenna cannot be extended outside an explosion-proof enclosure, making it unsuitable for this application.

GTP-541M 4G Multi-function Controller

WISE-5231M-4GC

  • Supports RS-485, Ethernet, and 4G communications.
  • Compatible with both Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP devices.
  • Includes built-in logic control functions for advanced applications.
  • While it meets the technical requirements, its higher cost made it less attractive for this project’s budget and cost-efficiency goals.

Conclusion

After evaluating functionality, deployment requirements, and overall cost, ICP DAS USA selected the GTP-541M 4G Multi-function Controller as the optimal solution. It was the only product that fully satisfied the project’s communication, integration, explosion-proof installation, and cost-effectiveness requirements, making it the best fit for the customer’s remote solar streetlight monitoring system.
