Highway Traffic Flow Monitoring with ICP DAS USA Controllers

Introduction
Inductive loop detectors are among the most widely used vehicle detection technologies, offering high accuracy and the ability to measure a variety of traffic parameters. To maintain smooth traffic flow on the National Highway No. 4 Taichung Circular Line Fengyuan-Tanzi Section, Taiwan’s Freeway Bureau implemented inductive loop detectors along the highway and adopted a traffic flow monitoring solution from ICP DAS USA. This solution enables the real-time collection, control, and analysis of large volumes of traffic data, helping operators monitor road conditions more effectively and respond quickly to traffic issues.
ICP DAS USA Traffic Flow Monitoring Solution
In this project, ICP DAS USA’s iP-8441 Programmable Automation Controller (PAC), I-8053W-A1-G Digital Input Module, and I-8057W-G Digital Output Module were integrated to create an inductive loop traffic detection system. The solution monitors vehicle speed and provides remote control capabilities for traffic signals and switching equipment, delivering efficient and reliable highway traffic management.
Solution Architecture:

Solution Overview
The iP-8441 Programmable Automation Controller (PAC) provides multiple communication interfaces, including Ethernet and RS-232/485, along with four expansion slots for I/O modules. Using Modbus TCP, it transmits traffic data to the control center for centralized monitoring and management. Designed for demanding outdoor environments, the controller features redundant power inputs, 1 kV surge and noise protection, and reliable operation in temperatures ranging from -25°C to +75°C.
In this application, the iP-8441 PAC serves as the core platform for traffic data acquisition, analysis, and control.
The ICP DAS USA I-8000 Series Digital Input Modules provide up to 16 digital input channels and deliver high-speed data acquisition, making them well-suited for inductive loop traffic detection systems that require fast and accurate collection of vehicle data.
Key Functions
Traffic Flow Monitoring
The I-8053W-A1-G Digital Input Module receives signals from inductive loop detectors and transmits them to the iP-8441 PAC via Modbus RTU. The controller processes and analyzes the traffic data, then sends results to the traffic control center using Modbus TCP. This enables real-time monitoring of traffic conditions, vehicle flow, and road status information.
Remote Traffic Signal and Equipment Control
The I-8057W-G Digital Output Module manages traffic signal displays and switch control within roadside control cabinets. Combined with the iP-8441 PAC, the system allows operators to remotely monitor and control traffic equipment, reducing the need for on-site intervention while improving operational efficiency.
Benefits
Multiple Communication Protocols
ICP DAS USA PACs support a wide range of industrial communication protocols, including Modbus TCP/RTU, CANbus, and EtherCAT, ensuring seamless integration with third-party devices and existing infrastructure.
Flexible and Expandable Design
The iP-8441 PAC supports up to four expansion I/O modules, allowing users to customize system functionality and scale applications to meet project requirements.
High-Speed Data Acquisition
The I-8000 Series modules deliver fast, reliable data collection, enabling traffic management systems to quickly receive and process large volumes of accurate traffic information.
Built-In Isolation Protection
The I/O modules include isolation protection to minimize electrical interference during data collection and transmission. For example, the I-8053W-A1-G utilizes photo-isolation technology to ensure stable and reliable operation.
Remote Monitoring Integration
By integrating the iP-8441 PAC with remote I/O modules, traffic management personnel can monitor road conditions in real time from a central control center, improving response times and operational efficiency.
