SCADA PID Control with AVEVA

Application of AVEVA PID Control

The PID control component in AVEVA Edge/SCADA provides closed-loop process control for a wide range of industrial applications. It allows engineers to configure, tune, and monitor PID functions directly within the AVEVA development environment.

1. Control Functions

PID Control Algorithm:
The standard PID controller supports incremental and reverse-acting modes.

Display:
The process variable (PV) can be displayed with a numerical range of –999999.99 to 999999.99.

Percentage Display:
The setpoint (SP), process value (PV), and manual value (M) can also be represented as percentages.

Development Configuration:
Users can configure all control attributes—including presets and parameter settings—within the AVEVA development environment.

Operating Status:
Supports manual/automatic mode switching. PID parameters may be adjusted during operation.

2. Operating Instructions

a. Inserting the Control Into a Screen

To add a PID control element:

  1. From the AVEVA screen editor, choose Insert → Control,
or select the insert-control button on the toolbar.

  2. In the dialog, select PID Control and confirm.

  3. Click and drag on the screen to define the display area.

b. Animation / Tag Connections

Double-click the PID control or right-click and choose Animation/Tag Connection.

(1) Basic Settings

  • Control Name: Must follow naming conventions (e.g., PIDCtrl0).

  • Priority: Defines execution priority (1–999).

  • Safety Range: Select the appropriate safety limit option.

(2) Property Bindings

Parameter Type Description
SP FLOAT Setpoint value
PV FLOAT Process variable
YOUT FLOAT Controller output
Type LONG PID type
CtrlPeriod LONG Control cycle
FeedbackFilter BOOL Enables feedback filtering
FilterTime LONG Filter constant
CtrlLimitHigh FLOAT Upper output limit
CtrlLimitLow FLOAT Lower output limit
InputHigh FLOAT SP upper limit
InputLow FLOAT SP lower limit
OutputHigh FLOAT PV upper limit
OutputLow FLOAT PV lower limit
Kp FLOAT Proportional gain
Ti LONG Integral time
Td LONG Derivative time
Tf LONG Filter time constant
ReverseEffect BOOL Reverse-acting option
IncrementOutput BOOL Incremental output
Status BOOL Manual/automatic indicator
M FLOAT Manual output value
PercentRange FLOAT Manual adjustment rate (default = 1)

Associated variables operate only when the control resides on the active screen.

3. Use of Command Language

a. When Using Tag Associations

If the project uses multiple screens and the PID control is not always visible, command scripts must be used to maintain control operation.

To configure:

  1. Open the screen containing the PID control.

  2. Open the Command Language editor.

  3. Assign values to SP, PV, and YOUT using script statements.

Execution Modes:

  • Display Time: Runs once when screen opens.

  • Saved Time: Runs repeatedly at a set interval while screen exists.

  • Implied Time: Runs once when screen is closed or hidden.

b. Use in Engineering Applications

Project-level command language can be executed:

  • On project startup

  • During runtime at scheduled intervals

  • On project shutdown

Steps:

  1. Open Project Browser

  2. Select Application Command Language

  3. Enter the control logic and compile

4. Setting Control Properties

Right-click the PID control → Control Properties

(1) Overall Settings

  • Control Cycle: Must be an integer greater than 100 and longer than the sampling period.

  • Feedback Filter: Applies a low-pass filter to PV.

  • Output Limiter: Defines upper/lower limits for YOUT.

(2) SP / PV / Output Ranges

Defines actual high and low values for SP, PV, and YOUT (0–100% ranges).

(3) Parameter Selection

  • PID Type: Standard

  • Kp: Typical 1–10

  • Ti: Typical 1000–5000 ms

  • Td: Typical 0

  • Reverse Effect: Enables reverse acting

  • Increase Output: Sets output direction

5. Run-Time Operation

Operators can switch the controller between manual and automatic modes.

Manual Mode:
The output (YOUT) is adjusted manually using variable M.

Adjustment:
Up/down buttons adjust manual output in 1% increments.

6. Run-Time Parameter Settings

Includes:

  • Proportional, integral, and differential constants

  • Reverse-acting option

  • Manual percentage adjustment

7. Features Not Yet Supported

a. Incremental temporary object control is not implemented.
b. The control cycle cannot be shorter than the sampling period.
