Cloud-Based Wind Turbine Foundation Monitoring and Data Visualization in the UK

Introduction
The client featured in this project is a leading UK asset maintenance contractor specializing in the refurbishment, repair, and ongoing maintenance of buildings and concrete structures.
Over time, the significant weight of wind turbines can cause the surrounding soil to shift, potentially leading to foundation deformation. If left unaddressed, this can result in unexpected turbine shutdowns, reduced operational efficiency, and higher maintenance costs.
Previously, technicians had to visit each site to manually collect vibration data, making the process time-consuming and labor-intensive. To improve efficiency, the client implemented an IIoT solution that wirelessly transmits vibration data from wind turbines to a monitoring center in London. By analyzing this data, the organization can identify potential issues early and implement predictive maintenance strategies that help prevent failures and reduce maintenance expenses.
This application demonstrates how ICP DAS USA’s cloud-based data visualization solution enables real-time remote monitoring of wind turbine foundations, providing greater operational visibility and improved maintenance planning.

Real-Time Remote Monitoring with the WISE-5231M-3GWA and IoTstar
This application uses the ICP DAS USA WISE-5231M-3GWA IIoT edge controller and IoTstar software to provide real-time remote monitoring of wind turbine foundations.
The system consists of two main components: the wind turbine field site and the monitoring center. At each turbine, the WISE-5231M-3GWA IIoT edge controller works with the XV310 I/O expansion module to collect and process data from linear variable displacement transducers (LVDTs) installed at four points around the turbine foundation. These sensors measure foundation movement and vibration, helping operators track structural conditions over time.
The collected data is transmitted to the monitoring center through a 3G wireless connection, where it is managed using ICP DAS USA’s IoTstar cloud management software. Through a centralized dashboard, operators can remotely monitor foundation conditions in real time, analyze performance trends, and quickly identify potential issues before they lead to costly downtime or repairs.
The system architecture is shown below:

Advanced Edge Control and Cloud Monitoring for Wind Turbine Foundations
ICP DAS USA’s WISE IIoT edge controllers are designed for industrial monitoring and automation applications, providing reliable edge processing and control capabilities. With built-in IF-THEN-ELSE logic, these controllers can perform automated actions, mathematical calculations, scheduling tasks, and email notifications without requiring additional programming.
When monitored values exceed predefined thresholds, the WISE controller can immediately trigger alarms or corrective actions, helping operators respond to potential issues before they become critical. In this application, the WISE-5231M-3GWA securely transmits wind turbine vibration data to the monitoring center via a 3G wireless connection.
IoTstar, developed by ICP DAS USA, provides a scalable cloud-based platform for remotely monitoring and managing WISE, PMC, and PMD series IIoT devices, along with connected sensors, I/O modules, and field equipment. The platform supports deployment on private cloud environments running Windows as well as major public cloud services, including Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and IBM Cloud.
For this project, IoTstar collects data from sensors connected to the WISE controllers, stores the information in a centralized database, and presents it through intuitive dashboards. This gives operators real-time visibility into wind turbine foundation conditions, enabling faster decision-making, improved maintenance planning, and enhanced system reliability.

Benefits
IoTstar also offers reporting services for WISE, PMC, and PMD series controllers, along with connected power meters and I/O modules. Users can generate detailed performance and operational reports in PDF or Excel format, simplifying data analysis and maintenance planning.

Conclusion
By implementing ICP DAS USA’s cloud-based data visualization solution, the customer successfully deployed a remote monitoring and predictive maintenance system for wind turbine foundations. The solution provides real-time visibility into foundation conditions, helping operators identify potential issues early, reduce maintenance costs, and improve overall turbine reliability.
This proven approach has also been successfully deployed in other applications worldwide. For example, the WISE-5231M-4GE and IoTstar platform have been used for remote monitoring of solar power installations across Phuket Island and its surrounding islands in Thailand. The same solution has also been implemented in India for remote monitoring of municipal water pump systems, demonstrating its flexibility across a wide range of infrastructure and industrial applications.
ICP DAS USA is committed to delivering easy-to-deploy IIoT solutions that simplify remote data collection, communication, and monitoring in challenging environments. By combining intelligent edge controllers with cloud-based visualization and analytics, ICP DAS USA continues to help organizations improve operational efficiency, enhance reliability, and gain actionable insights from their critical assets.
