Vaccine Storage Temperature Control

Vaccine Storage Temperature Control

Introduction

Vaccines are highly sensitive biological products, and maintaining the correct storage temperature is critical to preserving their effectiveness. Exposure to temperatures that are too high or too low can degrade vaccine components, reducing their ability to trigger the desired immune response.

Most vaccines must be stored between 2°C and 8°C, while some require ultralow-temperature storage. For example, the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine requires storage at approximately -70°C, and the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine must be stored at around -20°C. Reliable temperature control and continuous monitoring are essential to maintaining vaccine quality, stability, and potency.

This application demonstrates how ICP DAS USA’s ViewPAC programmable controllers and I/O modules help healthcare facilities in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan monitor vaccine storage temperatures and equipment status in real time, ensuring safe and compliant vaccine storage conditions.

ICP DAS USA’s Vaccine Storage Monitoring Solution

The medical and health care institution in this case is the most significant vaccine storage facility in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. In Taiwan, vaccines are delivered from domestic or foreign vaccine manufacturers and stored in a medical and health care institution of the city council in different regions before being distributed to major local medical institutions and education institutions. Therefore, the monitoring and management of vaccine storage spaces have become a big concern for this institution because Kaohsiung City is the third most populous city in Taiwan.

ICP DAS USA’s I/O modules (I-87017ZW-GI-87053W-GI-87055W-GM-7015P-G) were used in this case for digital and analog signal transmission for the vaccine storage space’s refrigerators and freezers, as well as the compressors. Additionally, the ICP DAS USA’s ViewPAC touch panel controller, VP-1239-CE7 series, was used for real-time monitoring of system conditions and to provide abnormal condition alerts.

The following diagram illustrates the ICP DAS USA’s vaccine storage monitoring solution and system architecture:

ICP DAS USA’s Vaccine Storage Monitoring Solution Components

The ICP DAS USA’s M-7015P-G RTD input module collects temperature data from RTD sensors installed throughout the cold storage facility. These sensors monitor critical points, including suction and discharge temperatures, compressor temperature, liquid line temperature, return air temperature, and storage room temperature, ensuring vaccines remain within required storage conditions.

The ICP DAS USA’s I-87053W-G (16-channel digital input module) and I-87055W-G (8-channel digital input/output module) monitor the operating status of refrigeration equipment and compressors. These modules capture signals such as compressor operation, cooling fan status, evaporator fan status, defrost cycles, motor overload conditions, and high-pressure alarms. They can also trigger warning devices, including buzzers and alarm lights, when abnormal conditions are detected.

The ICP DAS USA’s I-87017ZW-G programmable analog input module collects additional operating data from refrigeration equipment, including power consumption, equipment voltage, and high- and low-pressure measurements. Its configurable input ranges and built-in overvoltage and overcurrent protection provide reliable data acquisition in demanding industrial environments.

At the center of the system is the ICP DAS USA’s ViewPAC VP-1239-CE7 touch panel controller. The touch panel controller communicates with all I/O modules via Modbus RTU over RS-485, converts the collected data to Modbus TCP, and transmits it to the remote monitoring center. Its built-in visualization capabilities enable operators to view temperature, equipment status, and system performance in real time through intuitive graphical interfaces.

In this application, the ViewPAC VP-1239-CE7 provides centralized monitoring and automated control of the vaccine storage facility. When abnormal temperatures or equipment faults occur, the system can activate alarms, send notifications to facility personnel, and automatically initiate corrective actions. For example, if one compressor fails, a standby compressor can start automatically. If storage temperatures begin to rise, both compressors can be activated to help maintain the required temperature and protect vaccine integrity.

Benefits

  1. Improved Vaccine Protection
Each vaccine storage room continuously monitors temperature and equipment status. If abnormal conditions are detected, the system can generate alarms and automatically initiate corrective actions to restore proper storage temperatures. This helps reduce the risk of vaccine loss while minimizing troubleshooting time for staff.
  2. Real-Time Alerts and Escalation
The ICP DAS USA’s ViewPAC VP-1239-CE7 integrates with the facility’s alarm system to provide immediate notifications when issues occur. If an abnormal condition cannot be resolved automatically, alerts are sent to on-site personnel, maintenance teams, and equipment service providers, enabling a rapid response and helping ensure vaccine integrity.
  3. Predictive Maintenance and Data Logging
The ViewPAC VP-1239-CE7 records and stores critical operating data, including compressor current and voltage measurements. Historical reports and trend charts help maintenance teams identify potential issues early, support predictive maintenance strategies, and improve overall system reliability.

Conclusion

Vaccines play a vital role in protecting communities from infectious diseases, and maintaining their quality is essential. By leveraging IoT technology and ICP DAS USA’s automation solutions, this healthcare center implemented advanced vaccine monitoring and preservation practices, becoming an early leader in smart healthcare and intelligent vaccine management.
