In modern agriculture, technology continues to reshape even the most traditional environments—including chicken coops. This real-world application showcases how wireless ZigBee communication enables efficient livestock monitoring, automated data collection, and improved traceability inside poultry farming operations.
In this system, chickens naturally wander around inside the coop and occasionally step onto a scale placed in their environment. Each chicken is equipped with a small RFID tag on its foot. When a chicken steps on the scale, the system automatically records both the RFID identification number and the animal’s weight. No human interaction is required, and the birds continue their routine undisturbed.
Once the scale reads the weight and RFID tag, the data is transmitted wirelessly using ZigBee converters. These converters send the information across the coop to a control center located on the opposite side of the facility. The long-range ZigBee network reliably moves data through obstacles, achieving an effective transmission distance of up to 200 meters.
The control center is equipped with additional ZigBee converters to receive the incoming data. Programmable device servers then gather information from multiple ZigBee converters and consolidate it for processing.
After the data is received and collected, the system generates updated profiles for each chicken. Farmers can immediately view the latest weight, activity, and identification details on a computer interface, giving them real-time insight into flock health and growth trends. This streamlined approach reduces manual labor, improves data accuracy, and provides continuous monitoring across the coop.
ZigBee’s mesh networking capabilities allow the system to support up to 65,535 connected nodes, making it highly scalable for farms of any size. Even when physical obstacles are present, the network can reroute data through interconnected nodes, maintaining reliable communication throughout the entire area.
ZigBee converters are designed for industrial wireless transmission and can convert data from Ethernet, RS-232, or RS-485 devices into wireless signals. This flexibility makes them suitable not only for livestock monitoring but also for a wide range of industrial and agricultural control applications.
